Stock market close highlights, Monday, July 7, 2025:  Following a range-bound session, Indian equity benchmarks settled on a flat note as investors turned cautious after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that tariffs will be enforced starting August 1 for countries that haven't finalised an agreement with the Trump administration.

The BSE Sensex closed at 83,442.50 levels, marginally up by 9.61 points or 0.01 per cent, while the Nifty50 closed at 25,461.3 levels.

In the broader markets, the NSE MidCap 100 index was down 0.27 per cent, while NSE SmallCap 100 index was down 0.44 per cent.
The Nifty FMCG index rose 1.68 per cent, led by gains in Godrej Consumer Products, Dabur India, Hindustan Unilever, Emami, Britannia and Varun Beverages. The Nifty Oil & Gas and Nifty Energy also settled in green.

On the other hand, Nifty IT, Metal, Bank, Auto, Consumer Durables, and Pharma closed lower.

Bharat Electronics, Tech M, Ultratech, HCL Tech, Maruti, Infosys, Eternal, and SBI were the top losers, down up to 2.4 per cent. On the flipside, HUL, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Trent, Reliance Industries, Asian Paints, ITC and Adani Ports were the top gainers, rising up to 3 per cent.  Meanwhile, the India VIX, which gauges market volatility, settled higher by 1.99 per cent at 12.56 points.

Stock Market LIVE Updates: Expert view

Stock Market LIVE Updates: Markets made a muted start to the week and ended almost unchanged, continuing the ongoing consolidation phase. After a flat opening, the Nifty traded within a narrow range throughout the session and finally settled at 25,459.95. Most sectoral indices moved in line with the market trend, with IT and metal emerging as the top losers. However, the FMCG pack, which had been inactive for a while, showed signs of strength and posted decent gains. The broader indices also witnessed lackluster trading and ended with marginal losses.

Markets remain in a wait-and-watch mode ahead of trade deal updates and the start of the earnings season. That said, the underlying tone remains positive, supported by rotational buying in heavyweight stocks across sectors. Amid the ongoing consolidation, we maintain our bullish view and recommend continuing with a “buy on dips” approach, focusing on stock selection based on relative strength.

Stock Market LIVE Updates: Market expert view

Stock Market LIVE Updates: Indian stock market closed with a modest positive bias despite early volatility and global uncertainties. The Nifty 50 ended near 25,461 levels, showing resilience after opening slightly lower amid concerns over the US-India trade deal and regulatory developments, including Sebi's interim ban on US quant firm Jane Street. The Sensex remained largely flat, reflecting cautious investor sentiment. The market's positive closing was primarily driven by sustained buying interest from domestic institutional investors, which helped offset pressure from global trade tensions and profit booking at higher levels.

Key sectors such as FMCG, oil & gas, and realty witnessed selective buying, contributing to the market's overall stability. Looking ahead, market expectations remain cautiously optimistic. The near-term trend will likely depend on clarity regarding the US-India trade negotiations and domestic corporate earnings results for Q1 FY26. While global macro factors continue to inject volatility, steady domestic institutional support and positive sectoral performance may provide a buffer to the markets, enabling a gradual recovery and consolidation in the coming weeks.
